09 May The exciting new projects set to transform the Adelaide Hills
The Advertiser has revealed the exciting new projects set to transform South Australia’s fastest growing region – the Adelaide Hills..
Set to become SA’s second largest city in the next decade, Mount Barker has been in the limelight as one of the hosts of the recent AFL Gather Round and the nation is watching as a series of new projects helps to transform the township. We’ve rounded up the highlights of The Advertiser‘s list below…
The New Mount Barker Hospital
An exciting project is the new Mount Barker Hospital – a $220m development that will include 102 beds, 68 more than the hospital’s current capacity. Set to be built on the site of Mount Barker’s existing hospital, initial works are expected to commence this year with completion expected in 2027.
Premier Peter Malinauskas told The Advertiser that the Hills were rapidly growing and extra hospital services were an important plan of the government’s plan to address ramping.
“A bigger and better Mount Barker hospital is exactly what the local community has been calling for, and we are getting on with the job of delivering this important election commitment,” he said.
Aquatic and Leisure Centre
Also featured in the list of projects set to transform the region was the future Aquatic and Leisure Centre that will form part of the Summit Sports Hub in Mount Barker. The $29.6m centre is planned to include a 25m indoor lap pool, a learn-to-swim pool and a cafe with Stage 2 set to feature a gym and an outdoor pool. The Summit Sports Hub has been masterplanned to be an exciting new leisure, sports, and entertainment precinct.
The Aston Hills Shopping Centre
Just five minutes from Clover Park, the new Aston Hills Shopping Centre was named as a new retail destination that is set to service the entire Hills region from Strathalbyn to Stirling. The Advertiser recognised the shopping centre’s unique and convenient location adjacent to the Summit Sports and Recreation Park that recently hosted the AFL Gather Round plus the centre’s direct access from the freeway.
New Distillery in Nairne
Due to a reported “demand for a sophisticated drinking environment” in the region, the award-winning Tin Shed Distilling Company has submitted a development application for a new facility at Nairne, set to produce gin, whisky and rum.
If the application is successful, the distillery would see the old freezer on the former Chapman’s Meatworks site on Princes Highway transformed into a manufacturing facility with a cellar door attached, operating seven days a week.
Hahndorf Main Street Upgrade
This popular Adelaide Hills tourist destination and charming village is set for an upgrade to its popular main street.
Plans to upgrade the main street in Hahndorf include new street seating, enhanced outdoor dining areas, upgrades and extensions to footpaths, interpretative signage and heritage plaques for buildings plus landscaping, and work is set to commence this year with funds contributed from the Mount Barker District Council.
